Prospective Students
The International Education Office encourages all students to study abroad during their undergraduate career. UCLA offers a wide variety of options that you should consider when deciding where and when to go abroad. There are so many interesting programs, you may have difficulty deciding. Here are some factors to weigh as you make your choice:
1. Major and program of study. An adviser can help you decide which program will fit best into your undergraduate curriculum. Obviously, language students will easily find a program to meet their needs. Other majors may want to see if their department offers a Travel Study program or they can use the EAP Course Catalog to see which EAP program will allow them to earn credit towards their degree.
2. Duration of program. You will want to consider whether you want to do a short-term program or a long-term program. When deciding between these two formats, you might want to consider your housing in Los Angeles and whether or not it's flexible during the academic year. You might also have family issues to take into consideration as you decide whether you'd prefer a long-term immersion or a shorter experience.
3. Life goals and aspirations. If there's someplace you've always wanted to go, a culture you've always wanted to explore, or a language you've always wanted to learn, this is the time to do it. It's safe to say that the undergraduate years are the best time in life to live abroad. Most students can leave without fear of interrupting a work situation or even their educational timeline.
If you do not yet know which program you'd like to select, you can:
- Use the EAP Program Search and research country options to help narrow your search for the right program.
- Use the EAP Course Catalog to get an idea of classes that may be available abroad.
- Meet with an IEO Counselor at our office or on the Hill.
- Chat with an IEO outreach intern.
- Attend a workshop.
- Check out the EAP website for articles, slide shows, photo essays, and other works by EAP students and returnees.
