Nagoya University, headquartered in Chikusa-ku, Nagoya, is one of Japan's most prestigious universities. It was founded in 1871 as a temporary medical school. Then, in 1939, it became Nagoya Imperial University until its name was shortened in 1947. Nagoya seeks to provide an education that respects independent thought. There are roughly 10,000 undergraduate students and 7,000 graduate students who study in a wide variety of schools and departments. The university has 1700 faculty members, including four Nobel laureates, two in chemistry and two in physics. The city of Nagoya is the fourth largest in Japan and plays an important role in national industry.
