Non-UC Study Abroad

Students are encouraged to explore all of the UC-sponsored study abroad options such as EAP, Travel Study, and Quarter Abroad. UC-sponsored options guarantee course credit transfer and comprehensive financial aid packaging. Some students, however, may not find the location or course of study they are looking for among the UC options.

Students who participate in non-UC programs can:

Students are encouraged to speak with a representative in the IEO before signing up for a non-UC study abroad program. There are a wide range of non-UC programs available and choosing the right program requires some careful reflection. The IEO can help students choose a reputable program and offer advice on transfer credit.

Undergraduate Planned Academic Leave for non-UC Study Abroad

UCLA has created a Planned Academic Leave (PAL) for undergraduate students to study abroad on non-UC programs. To be granted a PAL, students simply register their program on the IEO Web site once they have been accepted to a non-UC program. This procedure allows students to use their federal and state financial aid to study abroad, grants a leave of absence, and sets up an enrollment (1st and 2nd pass) appointment to register for courses from abroad. Students should upload .pdf files of their syllabi to the IEO Web site. There is no cost to register for a PAL.

Students should not declare nonattendance on URSA. By declaring nonattendance, students risk being charged a $60 readmit fee, may need to reapply to UCLA, and may lose their priority enrollment appointment for the term they plan to return. It is easier and cheaper for students to study abroad via the PAL.

Graduate Students

Graduate students should consult with the Graduate Division to determine whether there are requirements when attending a non-UC study abroad program. The International Education Office would still like to know where you are studying abroad. Let us know what program you are participating in and what dates you will be abroad.
