Greece: Ancient, Medieval, and Modern Times
March 28 - June 10, 2010

Offered through the Department of Classics at UCLA, this program introduces students to ancient, medieval, and modern Greece through courses taught in the classroom, in museums, and at archaeological sites in Athens, Greece. Coursework covers the entire arc of history and its monuments from antiquity to Byzantium and up through the language and culture of modern Greece. Students are based in Athens, a classical city that has modernized more thoroughly than other European capitals yet retains the dynamism of its ancient predecessors, and accommodation in local apartments introduces participants to life in a friendly neighborhood of the city. Courses in the culture and monuments of ancient through Byzantine Greece are supplemented by language classes in Modern Greek at the Athens Centre. The program includes weekend trips to visit important archaeological sites in Greece, including Delphi, Epidauros, Corinth, Mycenae, Mystra, Nauplion, Olympia, Perachora, and Sounion, as well as visits to Aigina, Asine, Thessalonike, Meteora, Hosios Loukas and many other sites.

The curriculum offers 12 units of UCLA credit. Students from any university are encouraged to apply.

Directed by Professor Sarah Morris, UCLA Department of Classics.
