Ancient Greece
Curriculum
All courses are 4 quarter units each.
Required Courses:
History 112B: History of Ancient Mediterranean World
History 112D: History and Monuments of Ancient Greece
These courses will provide students the opportunity to examine in depth the origins of Western civilization. Students will study Greek history, art, literature, and architecture while visiting many architectural monuments.
Optional Course
History 199: Directed Research
You may earn independent study units by writing an academically rigorous 12-15 page paper on a topic approved by the instructor. The paper is due in September. Please note that these dates apply even if you plan to travel after the program ends. There is an additional fee for this independent study course.
Grading
5% Map quiz on Greece and the Aegean
10% Attendance, participation, and contributions to the course
15% Short Paper (3 pages) on Homer's Odyssey
15% Short Quizzes
30% Mid-term Examination (essay and short identification)
25% Final Paper (5 pages in lieu of a final examination)
Schedule
All schedules, itineraries, and group activities are subject to change at the discretion of the instructor.
There will be a 2 hour class in either mornings or afternoons, and you will attend daily field trips to sites and museums.
A detailed itinerary and class schedule will be mailed to enrolled students at a later date.
Textbooks
You are responsible for purchasing your own textbooks. We strongly suggest you read as much of the text material as possible before you depart. Textbook information will be available at a later date.
