Curriculum I: Beginning Italian
13 quarter units
Required Courses:
Italian I: Beginning Italian (4 units)
Italian 8A and 8B: Beginning Conversational Italian (2 units each)
Italian 42A: Italy through the Ages (5 units)
Optional Course:
Italian 199A: Directed Research (requires instructor consent)
Italian I covers material ordinarily intended for Italian I at UCLA and corresponds to one quarter of beginning Italian. Grammar and vocabulary acquisition is stressed, as you work to develop your skills in listening, comprehension, reading, writing, and speaking.
Italian 8A and 8B correspond to Beginning Conversational Italian and are intended to further develop your speaking skills and vocabulary acquisition. Planned cultural activities include practical excursions to open markets, museums, famous artistic sites, etc.
Italian 42A is a survey of Italy's unique contribution to Western civilization and will focus on the Renaissance.
Italian 199A is a directed research course designed to meet the needs of students already proficient in Italian. Students may substitute Italian 197 at no additional cost. Students who want to enroll in the directed research course must pay an additional fee. Both Italian 197 and 199A require writing an academically rigorous 15 page paper about Italian cinema, history or art. Obtain your instructor's approval on the subject and format. The paper is due by September 17. Please note that this date applies even if you plan to travel after the program ends.
Curriculum II: Intermediate Italian

Italian 8B and 8C: Intermediate Conversational Italian (2 units each)
Italian 42A: Italy through the Ages (5 units)

Italian 199A: Directed Research (requires instructor consent)
Italian 4 covers material ordinarily intended for Italian 4 at UCLA. A fast-paced review of essential grammatical structures and study of literary and cultural texts.
Italian 8B and 8C correspond to Intermediate Conversational Italian and are intended to strengthen speaking skills and more sophisticated vocabulary acquisition. Planned cultural activities include special preparatory lectures in Italian for cultural excursions.

Italian 197 and 199A are as described in Curriculum I.
Schedule
All schedules, itineraries, and group activities are subject to change at
the discretion of the instructor.
Classes generally do not meet on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
