Information on Coursework to Take Abroad for English Majors/Minors
Although ALL units and grades from EAP courses transfer automatically to your UCLA transcript and count towards graduation, applying the courses to major, minor or school requirements requires department approval. In English,
- Majors can apply courses taken abroad towards up to 6 upper division requirements for the major.
- Minors can apply courses taken abroad towards up to 2 upper division requirements for the minor.
- Majors and Minors may also apply courses towards foreign language and GE requirements.
For specific questions regarding requirements and course transfers, contact your major adviser.
Advice from English Department Advisers
- British and American literature courses taken abroad are generally accepted and applied toward UD requirements.
- Courses in literature originally written in a language or languages other than English may be accepted towards the departmental foreign language requirement or the World Literature concentration in the major. Thus, students with a World Literature concentration may have more flexibility transferring courses taken at a university in a country where the primary language is not English.
- Other concentrations, such as Creative Writing, will have few difficulties transferring survey courses in British or American literature or literary theory and criticism.
- Courses are generally transferred in groups of 4 units. For example, if a student took four 3-unit classes abroad, they would count toward the major as three 4-unit classes.
- British and American literature courses in translation will most often be applied to UD requirements. Even relevant courses in a foreign language, such as literary theory, may apply.
