UCLA Partnerships with Foreign Institutions

Departments can work with universities abroad to establish exchange agreements at the graduate and undergraduate level. UCLA has determined a set of criteria for exchange partnerships and each agreement must be reviewed by the Vice Provost of the International Institute and the Vice Provost of Intellectual Property and Industrial Relations.  To learn more and to initiate an agreement, visit mou.international.ucla.edu

Sponsoring International Student Visitors

Departments who wish to allow international graduate and Ph.D. students to visit UCLA for research or other study need to contact the International Education Office about facilitation of their campus registration, visa documents, and enrollment in research or other coursework. Departments should no longer initiate the DS-2019 request or request "affiliate/guest" status at the Bruin Card Office for non-degree international students.

Reciprocity Exchanges

If UCLA has a reciprocity agreement with another institution, visiting exchange students from that institution will not be assessed registration or campus fees (with the exception of health insurance). Reciprocity agreements must be vetted through the UCLA MOU process. If your department has a reciprocity student planning to visit UCLA, contact the International Education Office for a customized registration form. Visit the Exchange Programs section of the web site for more information.

Independent International Non-Degree Students and Visiting Student Researchers

Departments interested in hosting a visiting international graduate or Ph.D. student, where a reciprocity agreement does not exist between UCLA and the student's home institution, may do so with coordination with the International Education Office. Visiting graduate and Ph.D. students can study and conduct research at UCLA and will receive all of the privileges of UCLA students.  Campus fees are required (see below). Students must have the approval of a hosting academic department with a faculty member identified as their advisor. Students will be enrolled in research or other departmental coursework while visiting UCLA and will receive an official UCLA transcript. A J-1 visa is required for non-degree study or research at UCLA. Departments should consult with the International Education Office for registration instructions.

Campus Fees

The following fees are required for students coming to UCLA for non-degree study and/or research:

Fees include:

  • Access to campus-based services;
  • DS-2019 services and international programming;
  • Researcher status (if applicable). Non-degree students or researchers who plan to enroll in courses beyond independent research must pay additional per unit fees.

Fees are not due at the time of registration. If placement is approved by the academic department, instructions regarding payment of fees will be e-mailed to students.

Departmental Funding

Departments who are providing funding to cover campus fees will need to submit an exception request to the Graduate Division to process the payment accompanied by a Form 10. Once the request is approved the Graduate Division will process the fellowship which will then be applied to the student’s BAR account.

Travel Study Program Proposals

Many faculty members may have ideas on how time abroad will enhance their teaching of a particular course or courses. Usually, they are thinking of an experiential component, from simply being in the country where a language is spoken to visiting government or cultural institutions. Faculty interested in directing a short-term, summertime study abroad program should begin with the departmental chair to ensure that the department is willing to sponsor the program. Then, faculty can submit a Travel Study Program Proposal for further discussion with the International Education Office.

UC Education Abroad Program (EAP) Study Center Directorships

Currently EAP has suspended its call for UC faculty applications for Study Center Directorships due to structural reorganization.

English as a Second Language Placement Exam

Academic advisers may need to determine an international student's level of English and how to get remedial help when needed. English language learners are encourged to take the English as a Second Language Placement Exam (ESLPE). The ESLPE is administered by the Center for World Languages and students can register online. Once the test is graded, an ESL counselor can help the student determine which ESL class is most appropiate.
